Racism

My roommate and I went to the Union today to go grab something for lunch.  The table we sat at was right next to a table where four black (what's the PC term? Black? African American??) students were sitting. It's not that we were eavesdropping, it's that we were sitting next to their table and they weren't exactly being quiet with their conversation.

They were complaining (loudly) about how racist all the white people on this campus are, talking about how they're excluded.  Yet, in general, from what I've seen, they exclude themselves.  It's something my friends and I have talked about before, because we've realized it before.  If you go to the Union during Late Night to get mozzarella sticks, poutine, a hamburger, etc., you'll see it.  They all sit together.  They're all always together.  I'm not trying to be racist, and I'm trying to figure a way to word everything without sounding racist..  One of the things they said was that "White people aren't even racist by race, they're racist by color!"  But look, (and again, in general) they don't make an effort, so I don't see why other people should have to.  But that's not the point of this post.

They somehow moved from their conversation about how racist white people are, to an racist conversation of their own.  And that's the point of this post.

"I wouldn't ever be able to date someone with Chink eyes," said one of them at one point.  They talked about how "Hispanics and Spaniards and Mexicans are all the same thing anyway."  One guy said that "mixed babies" are the only good looking ones because they're not "pale as shit or real dark," but they're not good looking if they're mixed with an Asian person or a Hispanic person because "it'd have weird eyes."  The other guy said he could say he's Cuban and pretend to speak Spanish, and people would believe him that it was Spanish because of his skin color; one of the two girls at the table asked him if he could even speak Spanish anyway, to which he replied "No but it's just a bunch of, like, random noises."

I've heard people say before that Black people can't be racist because they're a "minority," but I don't agree with that.  At all.  Anyone can be racist against another race, or another skin color, that's different from their own.  (I'm not saying people should be racist.  I'm saying they can be.)  How is it that they "can't" be racist, and then they turn around and talk crap about Asian people and Hispanic people?  That's racism too.

How can you complain about people being racist towards you, and then turn around two seconds later and be racist towards another group of people?  That doesn't make sense to me.  People should just treat people they way that they want to be treated themselves, and respect each other.  We're all equal, we're all people, and there's nothing that makes a person worth more or less than any other person.
