New job!

Rumors that my current job is closing "soon" have been swirling around the community for a while now.  Some people actually thought we were already closed; a conversation I had more than a few times went somewhat similar to:

Person: Where are you working now?
Me: (name of the place)
Person: Are they still open?!??
Me: Well I'm working there, so...
Person: I thought they closed months ago!

I can't say anything, but these rumors have only been getting louder the past couple of weeks.  Like a couple others I work with, I've been searching for another job so I won't be left jobless (and unable to make my student loan payments) if we close.  Well, after applying to so many places that I felt like "applying to jobs" could be my full time job, I got a call back from someplace... and my first day is today.

I won't be working with kids at the new job, which I'm a bit bummed about, but it is what it is.  I'm not sure what I'll be getting paid (because I'm dumb and didn't think to ask about that at the interview), but my hours are definite and won't be changing for the worse.  I could wind up getting more hours added, but the manager said he wouldn't take hours away.

At the moment, I'll be working two jobs.  The new job during the week, and my current job on weekends.  I was planning on giving my two weeks at the current job, but - at a coworker's suggestion - decided that I'm going to tell my current boss that I found a second job and can now only do weekends (which is pretty much all I'm getting anyway) there.  I was going to tell her over the weekend, when I worked, but she wasn't there either day.  I want to tell her in person...  I'm a bit nervous about telling her, but I have to.

Eight Months Later

Eight months ago today, I was diagnosed as autistic.  And some days I feel like I’m still processing that diagnosis.  It’s something that, for so long, I had thought/suspected about myself and I thought, because I’d thought it for so long, that that knowing wouldn’t change anything.  And in some ways, most ways, nothing in my life has changed except that   I   know now and so do other people.  I mean, I’d started accommodating myself before that diagnosis – I got a weighted blanket for when I was experiencing anxiety or restlessness or just couldn’t sleep; I bought Loop earplugs to help with noise and started wearing them to things like concerts or hockey games or even the plays that we go to; I keep fidget toys at my desk at work; hell I even started keeping my hair short so it wouldn’t be   touching  me because I hate that sensory experience so much – so in my head, I thought it would be the same, I’d just be more knowledgeable about myself....

The Next President...

I didn't sleep last night; I was too afraid that America was going to make the worst possible decision.  And we did.  Somehow, Donald Trump became the president-elect.  Somehow, enough people actually voted for him.  Somehow, people support his racism , sexism , homophobia , Islamophobia .  Somehow, people were able to look past not only the fact that he has virtually no political experience and was the least qualified candidate for the job, but they were also able to look past the way he treats women and the fact that he's sexually assaulted multiple women.  (Wondering why it takes people so long to come forward about abuse?  Because we live in a country where their assailant can become leader of the free world.)
