2013 in review.

Well, there's only half an hour until the start of 2014 (it's already 2014 back home in New York, but I'm in Alabama and we're an hour behind...).

2013 was a long year.  There were ups and downs, as always in this crazy roller coaster of life.

In 2013, I spent four weeks in a first grade classroom.  This experience was great, and I LOVED it.  I learned a lot about myself and about teaching.  I feel like I grew so much as a pre-student teacher, and I'm so glad I got to have this experience.  My mentor teacher was fantastic, and I just learned so much from her.

In 2013, my grandma made me a dress like Rapunzel's (from the movie Tangled).  I don't think it's really cosplay, but a friend of mine said it is.  Each year, Potsdam's LGBTAA has a gay prom, and this past year, it was Disney themed.  Steven and I went as Flynn Rider and Rapunzel; we won for cutest couple.  The dance was SO fun.

In 2013, I participated in Relay for Life for the first time.  That was a great experience, and something I will do again.  I was there with Harry Potter Alliance.  I've been in that club since it first started (I was the second member, actually), and I've become so close to some of the other people in the club.  We really are all like our own little Harry Potter family.

In 2013, I finally finished writing the book I've been working on since my senior year of high school.  It was scheduled to be published this year, but things came up and hopefully it will hit shelves next year.  Fingers crossed!

In 2013, my sister turned 19.  I wasn't planning on coming home for my birthday this year; I was planning on spending it with a few friends up in Potsdam.  So, in August, we celebrated me and Nikki's birthdays together.  I made rainbow cupcakes to celebrate.

In 2013, I attended the Student Leadership Conference up at Potsdam.  That was definitely a learning experience.  It was really fun though, and if I was going to be at Potsdam again next fall, I would apply to go again.  But I'm graduating.

In 2013, I realized I had no idea what I wanted to get my Master's Degree in or even where I wanted to go for grad school. (I've since decided on special education).  Realizing that I had no idea, and no plan, was kind of a huge wake-up call.  I graduate next year (2014), and thinking about the future is something I needed to start doing.

In 2013, I spent 6 weeks in a fourth grade classroom.  I thought I learned a lot and grew a lot in my first placement, but I did even more so in my second placement.  I was nervous about being in with fourth graders, but my students were awesome and made me realize that older kids aren't as scary as I thought they would be.  Since Halloween was on a Thursday this year, I got to spend Halloween with my students.  Now THAT was fun.  During my time with them, I had some incredibly interesting conversations with my students; they're just the most interesting little people.  I miss being with "my" fourth graders, but I'll be back with those same students in March for my second placement of student teaching.

In 2013, I applied to student teach in Australia, which is something I have wanted to do and have been working towards since I first came to Potsdam.  My application was denied, BUT I got another opportunity to travel to Australia this summer.  There is a 3 and a half week study abroad course, which I was accepted in to.  I'm SO excited to travel to Australia this summer!  My flight leaves New York on June 23rd, 2014.  How exciting is that?!

In 2013, I lost my dad.  He passed away unexpectedly at the beginning of October, due to a massive heart attack.  I miss him so much.  I think I always will.  I tried, I still try, so hard to be strong for my younger siblings.  It's hard, but I try to be the one they can lean on.

In 2013, I spent Christmas in Alabama with my siblings and my step-mom.  I finally went to Nashville for the first time, which was an amazing experience.  I've wanted to go to Nashville since... well, forever.  I'm a country music fan.  Nashville is like... the center of the universe for country music fans.  I fell in love with Music City, USA the first second I was there.  I loved every second of our weekend there.  I cannot want to eventually go there again.  I'm actually now thinking about moving to the Nashville area after I'm finished with school.  Finish as an undergrad.  Get my Master's.  Move to Nashville.

With student teaching and going to Australia on the horizon for 2014, I'm looking forward to what 2014 has in store.  Bring in on, 2014.  Bring it on.
